Sharon Wood is the first woman from North America to summit Everest. Her debut memoir Rising (Douglas and McIntyre, 2019) recounts the details of the 1986 expedition, which followed the seldom-traveled West Ridge from the Tibet side—and without Sherpa support. Wood and teammate Dwayne Congdon were the only two from their elite 10-person team to make the summit. But the story doesn’t end there. Wood also narrates what she experienced during the media frenzy immediately following her achievement, and the way Everest changed her life—for better and for worse—in the three decades after.
Wood will begin her slide-show presentation at 7:00 pm at the Prestige Lakeside Hotel at 701 Lakeside Drive in Nelson. Doors open at 6:15 pm. Wood will speak for about 50 minutes, presenting highlights from her book and reading excepts of pivotal moments in the narrative. Afterward, she’ll take questions from the audience and sign books. Otter Books will be onsite selling books before, during, and after Wood’s talk. Cash, debit, and credit accepted. Rising costs $29.95 CAD + tax.
Tickets to this event are $10 each, and available online through Eventbrite here. Seating is limited to 150 people, and the Nelson Adventure Speaker Series anticipates we will sell out in advance.
The Nelson Adventure Speaker Series would like to thank our affiliates, especially Mountain Culture Group, publishers of Kootenay Mountain Culture magazine, for helping to get the word out about NASS’s inaugural book talk. With special thanks to Sharon Wood, for catalyzing NASS by offering to be our first speaker, and for generously waiving her speaker’s fee to help keep this event affordable. We are honored to host you in Nelson.
