Five years ago, Fernie resident Terry Nelson undertook an adventure of epic proportions—to seek out the largest, most awe-inspiring trees in the British Columbia interior to raise public awareness about the importance of old-growth forests. He documented his findings in the new book, Big Trees of the Inland Temperate Forests of British Columbia. This richly-illustrated field guide and big tree compendium is filled with fascinating facts and anecdotes from Terry’s quest. His adventures took him into the upper reaches of the Robson Valley in the north, to the Cascade Highlands in the west, to the Rocky Mountains in the east, and along the US border in the south.
The Nelson Adventure Speaker Series is pleased to welcome Terry Nelson to town for a presentation at the Nelson United Church on Tuesday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.
Terry will present photos and share anecdotes from Big Trees. He will have books available for sale before the presentation, and will sign them immediately following. Tickets to this event are $10 each, and available online through Eventbrite here. Seating is limited to 150 people.
Terry is a committee member of the University of British Columbia’s BC Big Tree Registry, which has a mandate to identify, describe, monitor, and conserve the largest trees of each species within the province, and to educate and enlist the help of its citizens in this task. “Big Trees of the Inland Temperate Forests of British Columbia” is his second book.
The Nelson Adventure Speaker Series is a non-profit endeavor, made possible with help from our sponsors Kootenay Mountain Culture magazine; Elephant Mountain Literary Festival; and Whitewater Ski Resort.
